Why Standing Seam

A roof you stop thinking about.

Asphalt is a 20-year decision you'll make twice. Standing seam is a once-in-a-lifetime decision — designed to outlive the mortgage, the renovation plans, and the next two storm cycles.

50+ year lifespan

A properly installed standing seam roof routinely outlasts the building it covers. Your asphalt neighbor will replace twice in the same window.

Built for storms

Class 4 impact resistance against hail. Wind ratings up to 140+ mph. Class A fire rating. The shingles a hurricane took off your neighbor's roof? Not happening here.

Cooler attic, lower bills

Reflective metal finishes bounce solar heat instead of absorbing it. Energy-efficient roofs see typical summer attic temperatures drop 30–50°F vs asphalt.

Insurance often discounts it

Class 4 impact rating qualifies many homes for homeowners insurance discounts in NC. We provide the documentation; your carrier does the math.

Resale you can quote

"50-year metal roof, installed [year]" is a line in the listing. Buyers know what it means. So do appraisers.

Designed in, not bolted on

Concealed-fastener standing seam looks intentional — clean ribs, hidden hardware, color-matched accessories. It elevates the architecture instead of fighting it.

Cost Per Year — The Real Math

Asphalt is cheap. Twice.

A roof's true cost isn't the install price — it's what you pay over its full life. Stretch the math out 50 years and the picture flips.

Architectural Asphalt

~22 yrs Average real-world lifespan in NC's heat & storms

You'll replace it 2–3 times across a 50-year horizon. Each replacement comes with a new tear-off, a new install, a new dumpster, and inflation-priced shingles.

The long view

Standing Seam Metal

50+ yrs One install. Manufacturer-backed for half a century.

Higher upfront cost — yes. But you only buy it once. No tear-off in 2046, no replacement in 2068, no insurance fight after the next storm cycle.

~$340 per year over 50 years*

Estimates based on a typical 2,400 sq ft Triangle home. Asphalt: ~$14k installed × 2.5 replacements over 50 yrs. Standing seam: ~$17k installed × 1. Actual numbers depend on roof complexity, profile, color, and substrate. We'll quote yours specifically at your consultation — no guesswork.

Profiles We Install

Standing seam, done two ways.

Both are concealed-fastener systems — no exposed screws to loosen, no rubber gaskets to dry-rot. Different attachment methods for different homes and pitches.

Snap-Lock Standing Seam

Panels lock together with a tongue-and-groove snap along the seam. Fast, clean, and ideal for residential pitches 3:12 and steeper. The most common modern profile.

Best for · Residential · 3:12+ pitch

Mechanical-Lock Standing Seam

Seams are mechanically crimped on-site for a fully sealed lock. The watertight choice for low-slope sections, complex roofs, or coastal exposure.

Best for · Low slope · complex roofs · coastal

Thomas and Chad replaced our roof. They made the process so easy and we're very pleased. It's been over a week and we've only found four nails in the yard. On time, respectful, and a great job cleaning up.

Common Questions

Before you book, you probably want to know…

How long does a standing seam roof actually last? +

50+ years is the realistic, well-documented range for a properly installed standing seam roof with a quality finish. Manufacturer warranties typically cover 30–50 years on the substrate and a separate lifetime warranty on the paint finish (Kynar 500® / PVDF). Compare that to architectural asphalt, which averages 20–25 years in NC's heat and storm cycles.

Is metal really worth the higher upfront cost? +

Depends on how long you plan to own the home. Over 50 years, a metal roof typically costs about half per year compared to asphalt, because you only buy it once instead of two or three times. If you're staying in the home long-term — or planning to sell to a buyer who values "I'll never replace this roof" — the math works. If you're flipping in 3 years, asphalt is the smarter spend.

Will a metal roof make my house louder when it rains? +

No. Modern standing seam is installed over a solid deck with underlayment — same as asphalt. The "rain on a tin roof" sound comes from old-school agricultural panels installed on bare framing without a deck below. On a finished home, a metal roof is no louder than asphalt.

Does a metal roof attract lightning? +

No — that's a myth. Metal roofing does not increase the likelihood of a lightning strike. If anything, because metal is non-combustible and conducts to ground, it's safer in a lightning event than a wood-framed shingled roof.

Can you install metal over my existing asphalt roof? +

In some cases — yes, with proper underlayment and battens. We assess this at the design consultation. Whether to tear-off or re-roof over depends on the condition of the existing shingles, deck, and the metal profile being installed. It's a quote-time decision, not a default.

Do you handle insurance discounts and HOA approvals? +

Yes. Most NC carriers offer a discount for Class 4 impact-rated roofing — we provide the certificate and the manufacturer's documentation. For HOAs, we can supply color samples, manufacturer cut sheets, and product spec for your architectural review.

What's the warranty? +

You get two: a 50-year manufacturer warranty on the panel substrate plus a separate lifetime paint warranty (no chalk, no fade), and a 10-year StormSafe workmanship warranty in writing. If our install fails, we come back. Period.
